Sun is the most important
and abundant source of energy; however, it is also the most under-used.
At present, only a miniscule percentage (0.1%) of energy needs of the
world are fulfilled by solar energy. Solar powered electricity is a
relatively new technology that uses sunlight to operate turbines for
electricity generation. One important technology is Photovoltaic (PV)
which uses solar cells to convert solar energy into electricity.
Electricity from solar energy has a low contribution to the
gross electricity consumption but has very high mid to long-term
potential.
Governments are actively mitigating the high
costs to implement and promote individual solar based technologies
through incentives. Financial support from Governments has helped solar
energy achieve some of the cost reductions which was needed for mass
deployment. The “on-grid” energy capacity is therefore
growing quickly in Europe, led by Germany and the Netherlands.
Benefits of using solar energy
- Fastest growing renewable energy market
- Availability
- Positive impact on environment
- Low marginal cost
